Description
Penfolds Bin 920 continued the special bin tradition of Penfolds to produce am outstanding wine from an exceptional vintage. Just like the 1966 Bin 620 and the 1982 Bin 820, the 1990 Bin 920 is a pure expression of Cabernet and Shiraz from Coonawarra. Beautifully gift boxed, the Bin 920 is a collectors dream that still offers so much for the consumer as well. Full-bodied and soft upon release, the wine has aged magnificently after over 20 years in the bottle.
Penfolds Bin 920 was all the rage at the last Penfolds Rewards of Patience. Described as ‘Deep crimson, intense, a very concentrated, rich, luscious wine.. . immaculately composed evocative wine with decades of cellaring potential’. Continue to cellar with ease until 2030 or if you can’t wait until then give her a decant and drink it up!
Wine background. Penfolds Show red wines have been produced sporadically since 1962, typically in quantities of 500 dozen, and designed specifically for show purposes. These wines put the lie to those who sneer at ‘show wines’, for they include in their number the majority of the greatest reds made in Australia since 1962 – greater even than Grange. The last release (Bin 920) was a blend of 65 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 35 per cent Shiraz from Coonawarra.
Penfolds Bin 920 – The colour is almost impenetrable, so deep is it. There is amazingly lush, opulent plummy fruit on the bouquet; the palate has layer upon layer of dark plum, cassis and cherry fruit with equally layered soft and supple tannins running throughout. Will be ready long before Bin 90A, though nonetheless has a 20-year future.
