Coldstream Hills, located in Victoria’s Yarra Valley has access to some of the best vineyards in the region. Founded by James and Suzie Halliday in the mid 1980’s, James introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills which demonstrated their unique styles. In 2009, Coldstream Hills recommenced releasing single vineyard wines.
The 2012 was an outstanding vintage for Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. Rainfall in late spring followed by warm and dry conditions led to excellent growing conditions. Well managed vineyards throughout the Valley responded with very healthy canopies and vigour. Poor weather at fruit set resulted in lower than average yields in the cooler parts of the Upper Yarra.
The 2012 vintage is the first release of The Esplanade Pinot Noir. The colour is medium crimson red and the nose has opulent ripe fruit characters, dark cherries, raspberries and plums. This wine spent 9 months in French oak, which adds further complexity to the wine which is supported with whole bunch stalkiness and spice. It is a medium bodied Pinot Noir with dark cherry and plum, secondary characters of whole bunch savouriness, earth and mineral are underpinned by the French oak. This wine has great structure and finishes with silky persistent tannins.
