Description

The 1999 Penfolds Grange is a very good Grange and an excellent follow up to the 1998 Grange which is a blockbuster. The 1999 vintage was an excellent growing season for the shiraz grape in the Barossa Valley. The 1999 Penfolds Grange is made from 100% shiraz, most Penfolds Grange is made from shiraz up to 97% but as low as 85% and the remainder is made up with cabernet sauvignon.

The 1999 Penfolds Grange should be sailing into peak drinking waters around 15 years of age, it is a very good Grange, not quite at the “A” Grade Grange level such as 1990, 1998 and 2004 vintage’s but it isn’t far off them. It is still a fabulous wine and it is the best wine made by Penfolds during the 1999 vintage.

Rated 96Pts by Jeremy Oliver.

The 1999 Penfolds Grange is impenetrable deep red/purple. The nose displays blueberry and blackberry fruit, malty, savoury oak, with anise and liquorice notes. After a decant the wine becomes more complex, deeper, richer and darker. There are layers of fruit, blueberry and blackberry and an an underlying tarriness and new oak are seamlessly absorbed. Fine grained tannins lead to a firm finish with great length. The 1999 Penfolds Grange has the DNA of some of the great Grange’s, it is an excellent Grange.

The 1999 vintage in South Australia was cool and dry during early summer, then came a hot spell in late January before moderate conditions during vintage. 1999 is regarded as a very fine vintage for Barossa Valley shiraz. The 1999 Penfolds Grange is made from 100% shiraz and the wine spent 17 months in new American Oak.
