Description

The 1991 Penfolds Grange is another “A” Grade Grange, the second such Grange in a row but it lives in the shadow of the very famous 1990 Penfolds Grange and more recently has slipped further down a notch or two. Nevertheless the 1991 Penfolds Grange is a very great Penfolds Grange and was the second consecutive great vintage for South Australia and Penfolds Wines.

The 1991 Penfolds Grange is deep crimson in colour, it is a substantial wine with dark chocolate/malty/liquorice/smoky/cedar aromas. The 1991 Penfolds Grange is dense, multi layered palate with sweet fruit, saturated dark chocolate/plummy fruit, plentiful cedar/grainy tannins and ample toasted oak. It finishes with a chalky firm tannin slick. The 1991 Penfolds Grange is a bold and beautifully balanced Grange with immense concentration, refinement and extract. It is a long haul wine which has slipped out of the shadow of the more famous 1990 Penfolds Grange.

The 1991 Penfolds Grange is made from shiraz 95% and cabernet sauvignon 5%. Fruit used for the 1991 Penfolds Grange was sourced from the Kalimna Vineyard, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. The 1991 vintage was a warm, dry year with even ripening conditions, vintage started early but it was a classic year which produced a great Grange.
