Description

The 1986 Penfolds Grange is an “A” Grade Grange and one of the best Granges and the best to come from the 1980’s. In 1990 Robert Parker Jnr rated the 1986 Penfolds Grange 98/100 and it was rated 95/100 by Jeremy Oliver. When released this wine was priced around $80 and now bottles in excellent condition can fetch as much as $700+ on the secondary wine market.

During the Rewards of Patience – sixth edition the 1986 Penfolds Grange was described as deep crimson in colour. A powerful wine, intense with mocha/liquorice/cedar aromas with smoky oak characters.  The palate is rich and extravagant, it is complex with dark chocolate/herb fruit/dark berry/mocha with ripe tannins.  It finishes very long and full of flavour. This vintage could break all records in respect to longevity.

The 1986 Penfolds Grange is made from shiraz (87%) and cabernet sauvignon (13%). Fruit was sourced from the Kalimna Vineyard, Modbury Vineyard and vineyards located in the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale. Conditions throughout the vintage were mild and dry, a vintage of outstanding quality. Matured in new American oak for 20 months drink with Argentinean style lamb back-strap.
