Winemaker comments by Don Ditter

The 1975 Penfolds Grange was tasted in 1999 and its colour was garnet red.  The nose is sweet, spice, leather and meaty aromas with some liquorice and almost port-like nuances.  On the palate the 1975 Penfolds Grange is concentrated and rich with ripe, berry fruit/tobacco, touches of spice and some leafiness.  The tannins are extractive and bitter, the wine, a very muscular style but it could soften out.  Fruit for the 1975 Penfolds Grange was sourced from the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra wine regions and Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard.  Vintage conditions were cool, with a mild, dry vintage.  The 1975 Penfolds Grange is a blend of 90% Shiraz 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured in new American oak for 18 months.
