Description

The 1973 Penfolds grange was the final vintage of Grange to be made at the Magill winery in Adelaide and the last Penfolds Grange made in the open, wax-lined concrete fermenters. Vintages of Penfolds Grange from and including 1974 were made at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley. The 1973 Penfolds Grange is considered a good Penfolds Grange from an undistinguished vintage. The 1973 Penfolds Grange won a trophy, 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 6 bronze medals between 1974 and 1982.

Winemaker comments by Don Ditter

The 1973 Penfolds Grange is medium brick red in colour. The nose has camomile, citrus peel and chocolate/berry aromas with a touches of soft leather. On the plate this wine was mouth filling and very big, with notes of tar, sweet, stocky fruit, nutmeg and leather. The wine finishes long with gripping tannins. More structured style but still has a very good core of fruit sweetness. Fruit for the 1973 Penfolds Grange was sourced from the Kalimina Vineyard, the Barossa Valley, Magill Estate and Modbury Vineyard. The growing season was dry which was followed by a cool vintage. The 1973 Penfolds Grange is a blend of 98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon and was matured in new American oak for 20 months. Alc/Vol 12.4% and drink with a mature cheddar cheese.
