Description

The 1965 Penfolds Grange is regarded as a very good Penfolds Grange. The 1965 Penfolds Grange won the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1966 where it was awarded the best 1 year old red wine at the Melbourne Show. Between 1966 and 1973 the 1965 Penfolds Grange won 2 more gold medals and 6 other medals. Bottles from the 1965 vintage were labeled Bin 69, Bin 70, Bin 71 and Bin 95. Penfolds labelled bottles according to where they were stored in their cellars. In 1970 all Penfolds Grange bottles were labelled bin 95.

The 1965 Penfolds Grange is made from a blend of 95% shiraz and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Fruit for this wine was sourced from a number of vineyards across different wine regions throughout South Australia, those being Magill, Kalimna, McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. Vintage conditions were generally good with a dry and warm growing season. The wine was matured in American oak for 18 months. Drink with mature cheddar cheese.

Rewards of patience – sixth edition – Medium deep brick, intense earthy/gamy/bitumen/cedar aromas with some spiced orange peel notes. An elegantly structured but substantial wine with earthy/dark chocolate/cedar/herb characters and fine chocolaty tannins. The 1965 Penfolds Grange is now quite rare.
