Description

The 1961 Penfolds Grange was the first Penfolds Grange to use grapes from Coonawarra which is located in South Australia’s far south east corner. The Coonawarra Wine Region is known for its cooler climate and of course that famous Terra Rossa soil. The 1961 Penfolds Grange won 2 gold and 3 silver medals in Australian wine shows between 1963 and 1968. As with most early vintages of Penfolds Grange, this vintage is now quite rare. When made the bottles were labelled Bin numbers 95 and 395. 1961 Penfolds Grange.

Winemaker comments by Max Schubert.

The 1961 Penfolds Grange is Brick colour with a complex and spicy nose. The palate reveals sweet fruit, developed mushrooms and soft tannins. Grapes for this wine were sourced from The Magill Estate, Modbury, Morphett Vale Kalimna Vineyard and for the first time the Coonawarra Wine Region. Hot and dry vintage conditions with growing season rainfall less than half the average. The 1961 Penfolds Grange is made from Shiraz (88%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (12%). As with the previous vintage the 1961 Penfolds Grange was left to mature for 18 months in new American oak hogsheads. 1961 Penfolds Grange.
