Description

The 1959 Penfolds Grange was the last vintage of the three ‘hidden’ or ‘secret’ Granges made by Max Schubert in defiance of a company order to cease production of this now very famous wine. The 1959 Penfolds grange was released commercially after the ban was lifted. New American oak was not used in any of these three ‘secret’ vintages, the 1959 Penfolds grange was matured in used American oak barrels. 1959 Penfolds Grange was released and labelled Bin numbers 46, 49 and 95.

Winemaker comments by Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Edition VI

The 1959 Penfolds Grange is deep brick red in colour. The nose is dark cherry/demi-glace/bitter chocolate aromas with touches of marmalade. The palate is quite firm, dark cherry, mocha, bitter chocolate and garden herb flavours, grained chalky – almost stemmy – tannins. The wine finishes dry but it still has good flavour length. Grapes were sourced from vineyards located in Magill Estate (Adelaide), Morphett Vale (Adelaide) and Kalimna Vineyard vineyards. A cool to mild growing season followed by a generally warm vintage. The 1959 Penfolds grange is made from Shiraz (90%) and the balance is Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). Matured for a total of 18 months in used American hogsheads. Lasted tasted in 2008, peak drinking now.
