Description

1952 Penfolds Grange was the first vintage of Grange to be released commercially with a retail price of $1.00 per bottle. As with the 1951 vintage, production was small, a mere 150 cases were made and today the wine is a collector’s item because of its historical significance and it is very rare. Some bottles are still holding up well but only those that have been cellared and are in excellent condition. The 1952 Penfolds Grange is a more lively and concentrated wine compared to the 1951 vintage.

1952 Penfolds Grange Bottles were labelled Bin numbers 4 and 4A. One of three Grange vintages (1953 and 1962 are the others) produced in half (375ml) as well as full (one pint) bottles.

The 1952 Penfolds Grange was made from 100% Shiraz. The fruit was sourced from 50 per cent Magill (Adelaide) and 50 per cent Morphett Vale (Adelaide). Alcohol: 13.6%. Vintage Conditions: Average/normal rainfall and general weather conditions.

The Rewards of Patience – sixth edition – some notes:
– Huon Hooke – The 1952 Penfolds Grange was initially impressive then it became quite raisny/pruney, but it was 55 years old and was still drinking well.
– Ch’ng Poh Tiong – My favourite of the 1950’s was the 1952 with its perfumed sandalwood, joss stick characters. It has the impact of a temple: light, vibrant and spotlessly fresh.
