Description

The 1998 Penfolds Bin 389 is one of the finest ever release’s of this classic and much loved Australian Red Wine.  The 1998 vintage was outstanding and the 1998 Penfolds Bin 389 is very highly sought by wine collectors.  The 1998 Penfolds Bin 389 can sell for twice and up to three times the price of other Bin 389 vintages, such as the 1992, 1993 or 1997.  Penfolds Bin 389 is matured in a combination of new and used American oak, some of the used oak held the previous vintage of Penfolds Grange, and it is often referred to as ‘Poor Mans Grange’ or ‘Baby Grange’.  Penfolds Bin 389 is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz, the shiraz adds fruit richness and the cabernet component provides structure to the wine.

Fruit to make the 1998 Penfolds Bin 389 was sourced from a number of regions including Padthaway (30%), Bordertown (25%), McLaren Vale (20%), Barossa Valley (19%) and a small component from the Clare Valley.  This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Shiraz (42%) and was aged in new (22%) and seasoned American oak barrels for 14 months.

During the Rewards of Patience sixth edition – the 1998 Penfolds Bin 389 was awarded the “Red Star” rating and described as still very youthful and elemental for its age, drinking well, but its best is yet to come.  Probably time to start drinking these wines if you own them but they will always remain highly collectable.
