Description

2004 Penfolds Kalimna Block 42.  This wine is all the rage at the moment, collectors are snapping up bottles and paying a high price too.  Penfolds Block 42 vineyard is located in the Barossa Valley, planted in 1886 Block 42 comprises the oldest plantings of cabernet sauvignon continually produced.  The 2004 Penfolds Kalimna Block 42 cabernet sauvignon is a perfectly balanced, ripe and beautifully aromatic wine. For over 120 vintages these vines have produced flavour-intense, mineral-rich fruit with exceptional concentration and balance.

Providing ‘lift and structure’, Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon was blended into many early bottlings of Penfolds Grange. The Block 42 vineyard continues to be an important component of Bin 707, providing backbone and substance to the overall style.

Penfolds Block 42 isn’t released as a single vineyard wine very often due to the low yeilding nature of this vineyard.  The fruit from Penfolds Block 42 was used in earlier bottlings of Penfolds Grange, nowadays the fruit from Block 42 is used in Penfolds Bin 707.  The most recent released of Penfolds Kalimna Block 42 was the 2004 vintage and was sold en primeur – Penfolds was the first Australian winery to use this selling method made famous by the chateaux of Bordeaux.

2004 Penfolds Kalimna Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense in colour.  The nose possess intense blackcurrant, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas.  The flavours are richly concentrated with fine, silky tannins in perfect harmony. The fruit explodes across the palate, showing its sheer power and weight, giving tremendous depth and length of flavour.
