Description

2001 Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is a classic claret-style Yarra Valley wine.  It was Yarra Yering’s Dry Red No.1 on which Yarra Yering’s reputation was built.  Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is a medium-bodied / low alcohol wine which might suggest delicacy, it is however a sleeping powerhouse of intensity, precision and concentration.  Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 needs time in the bottle to unfurl its sails.  In 1969, Dr Bailey Carrodus planted 12 hectares of vines in the Warramate Hills in 1969.  The first vintage of Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 was in 1973, the first vintage of Yarra Yering Dry Red No.2 was also the 1973 vintage.

Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Fruit is hand pick at optimum ripeness and vinification takes place in small open fermenters, the wine is then matured in ‘closely textured’ new French oak for around 22 months.

Jeremy Oliver 96 points!  “ Delicate fragrance of violets and cassis, plums and lightly chocolatey cedar/vanilla oak. Smooth and supple, with an almost searing intensity of pure blackcurrant and mulberry flavours, given the extreme fineness and silkiness of the palate. Supremely long and tight-knit, with an underlying spine of finely astringent tannins. A classic house style, destined for a long cellar-life.”  Jeremy Oliver, OnWine, Tasted 18/06/2003
