2012 Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. Hoddles Creek Estate, which is located on Gembrook Road, Hoddles Creek, (Yarra Valley) Victoria is family owned and operated. Winemaker Franco D'anno, a Carlton supporter (AFL), is making some awesome wines including Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. Leading the way are the Hoddles Creek 1er Range of Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, they are indeed some of the Yarra Valley's finest wines, seriously the 1er range is great value for money.

Time, effort and a lot of hard work has enabled Hoddles Creek Winemakers to gain a better understanding of their vineyards which has enabled them to identify certain blocks within the winery that perform at a higher standard each vintage. These blocks have been cared for separately enabling Winemakers to fine tune viticulture and winemaking with a view of releasing some single block wines in the future. The Pinot Noir for the 1er comes from the Hoddles Creek original vineyard which is located next to the winery. Forty four rows of Pinot Noir are planted in this block and they contain five different pinot noir clones. Rows 22 to 26 always look exceptional, they are balanced with moderate shoot length and small berries. Hoddles Creek Winemaker's have treated the Pinot Noir from this block separately since 2005, when they highlighted that the rows produce slightly different fruit than the remainder of the vineyard. With the vineyard in balance, they simply shoot thin around the crown and take off any multiple shoots. The vines would normally crop about 1.3 kilograms per vine.

WINEMAKING

In the winery, the 1er Pinot Noir undergoes the same treatment as the Estate Pinot Noir except for the inclusion of twenty per cent whole bunches. The inclusion of 20% whole bunch gives the wine a little more structure for further aging and the tannins are a touch finer. The wine spends eighteen months in cask and is not filtered, not fined, or stabilized prior to bottling.
