2002 Giaconda Pinot Noir. Rated 95Pts by Jeremy Oliver. 2002 was a great vintage at Giaconda.

The Giaconda Vineyard was established by Rick Kinzbrunner in the early 1980's. Rick was an Assistant Wine Maker at Brown Brothers Winery and he bought some land near the old Everton Hills Vineyard and commenced planting Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc vines, and a small amount of Pinot Noir. In 1986 Rick planted another acre of Pinot Noir vines and more recently further plantings of Pinot Noir vines have occurred.

 

The vineyard is planted in a small valley at 400 metres altitude and is a south facing slop. The vines aren't exposed to direct sun rays and the vineyard remains relatively cool, with a light breeze which helps control disease. The soil in Giaconda Vineyard is granitic loam over decomposed gravel and clay. The clay plays an important role in sustained water release. Generally the nights are cool and the days are warm making ripening conditions ideal. Rainfall average in 700mm but during summer rain fall is often a rare occurrence. Depending on the vintage conditions, the vines may receive drip watering to help control stress.

 

Giaconda Pinot Noir is now a blend of Gianconda Estate fruit and premium fruit sourced from the Yarra Valley. Giaconda Pinot Noir is fermented in a tank then transferred into French oak (about 25% new). Giaconda Pinot Noir is aged in French oak for 16 months which allows the wine to maintain vibrancy and freshness. Giaconda Pinot Noir is matured deep underground in Giaconda's granite maturation cave located at Giaconda Estate.
