The 1980 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 Shiraz is a very well balanced wine. In 1990 Robert Parker Jnr rated the 1980 Penfolds Grange 96 points, Max Schubert described the 1980 Penfolds Grange as "A good year and quite a good wine".
Rewards of Patiences - sixth edition - the 1980 Penfolds Grange was described as deep brick red in colour. Fresh aniseed/meaty/earthy/cedar aromas with a hint of menthol. The palateis elegantly proportioned with rich generous dark berry/meaty/earthy/cedar/mint flavours and slinky leafy tannins. It finishes sinewy and dry but long and flavourful. A very well balanced wine which may further improve. The 1980 Penfolds Grange is made from a blend of shiraz (96%) and cabernet sauvignon (4%), its fruit was sourced from the Barossa Valley (including Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard), Clare Valley, Magill Estate, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra Wine Region. It was a drought affected summer which was warm and hot, followed by a warm dry vintage. The 1980 Penfolds Grange was the first vintage adopting consistent use of signature red Penfolds capsules.
