2005 Giaconda Chardonnay.  Giaconda Winery is situated in the Beechworth wine region in Victoria. Giaconda Chardonnay is one of Australia’s best Chardonnay’s, each vintage is always highly rated by wine critics.  Giaconda Chardonnay has a super-cult status and, given the tiny production, they are extremely difficult to find; they are sold mainly through restaurants, mail order and a few fine wine online retailers (those lucky enough to get their hands on some bottles).  Giaconda Chardonnay, when young is tight and reserved, it needs time in the bottle, it is however, classically proportioned, complex and enduring, made with the same disregard to modern and allegedly enlightened winemaking techniques as the very best from Burgundy.  It is a cellaring style chardonnay!

Winery Review - A great follow on to '04, extremely lifted nose with powerful fruit balancing the mineral and meal characters. A classically rich palate, has great focus with the minerality keeping the wine fine and drawing it out. This should develop into one of our great chardonnays as the '05 vintage produced fruit of extraordinary quality. In fact I haven't felt as confident about the chardonnay since the 1996.

The 2005 Chardonnay Estate was barrel fermented with native yeasts in French oak, 50% new, where it remained for 18 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered. Medium gold-colored, it delivers aromas of mineral, spice box, baked apple, poached pear, and tropical notes. Medium to full-bodied, it is layered and rich with intense flavors, superb depth and a very long finish. It will evolve for several years and drink well for a decade. Giaconda, founded by Rick Kinzbrunner, released its first wines in 1987. The winery and vineyards are located in Beechworth in northeastern Victoria. The Wine Advocate.
